Chapter 12
Up and down the block, lights came on. The residents of N. Roman Street had heard the gunfire. This was bad for the team.
Skyscraper spat on the ground breathing hard. He’d hauled off and punched Daher Tahan in the face three times rendering the man unconscious. He turned to Badger who’d come rushing across the street. “Take this one! You know what to do,” he said.
“Baz has Fatima. Jersey has their tail. I got this one. Go.”
Skyscraper picked up his rifle and headed across the street. Something made him turn around. His eyes scanned the lawn. Outlaw had Jasmin, Badger had the first Muhammed. Ghost was crouched over someone lying on the ground.
It was Mr. Emmet.
“No!” The cry ripped from Marcus’s lips. Mrs. Emmet came running from next door and his mother made her way down the front steps.
“Call 9-1-1!” Mrs. Emmet howled, dropping to her knees next to her husband.
His mother caught his eye. “Go, Marcus! Don’t let him get away. Get her! We got this!”
Hollywood ran up stopping short at his side. “Go. I’ll follow in the Suburban.”
Skyscraper tamped down his rage. Omar had Fatima again, something he promised would not happen. His mother’s house had been invaded by terrorists, and now, Mr. Emmet might be dead. Fury fueled him as a deadly calm took over. He turned and ran between the two houses following in Jersey’s footsteps. He had to catch up. No one would deal with Baz but him, and in this moment, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to follow orders. Baz didn’t deserve to live. He reminded himself that accidents happened in the field all the time.
Behind him, Outlaw went into damage control mode.
“Badger, you and Ghost get sleeping beauty off the lawn now!” He turned to Mrs. DuBose. “I hate to ask, but—”
She turned and without blinking, “The root cellar. Tie ‘em up and lock them in. Quick, before the police get here.”
Outlaw cleared his throat. “Pretty sure one of them is dead, ma’am.” The statement was more a way of questioning whether Skyscraper’s mom was really okay with him commandeering a corner of her house as a makeshift holding cell, at least until the police came and went. He also didn’t like Skyscraper going after Omar alone. In his current state of mind, he would filet Baz for taking Fatima and nearly abducting his sister.
“A bullet to the head will do that. Why you wastin’ time, Captain? Move!” The tough-as-nails woman planted her hands on her hips, her face filled with a familiar motherly annoyance.
“Yes, ma’am!” He didn’t need to be told a third time. Twice was enough. “Ghost, the root cellar. I’ll get the dead weight.” Ghost and Badger had already hog-tied Daher Tahan who was still unconscious, his wound where his hand used to be bleeding all over the lawn.
“I have some duct tape in the garage,” said Mrs. DuBose. “Jas, go get it for them. They’ll need to make sure that one stays quiet in case he wakes up.
